Legacy of Faith
This past Sunday morning our deacons met. It was our last meeting before the new church year which begins September 1. For the past year we have watched a DVD in our deacons meetings featuring Pastor Johnny Hunt from First Baptist Church, Woodstock, Georgia. Included in this DVD are eleven 10-minute micro messages. We viewed the last micro message this past Sunday. It was called Epitaph For A Deacon Body. The emphasis was on leaving a legacy for future generations.
Recently I read a book that asked the question, What will your epitaph be? It is something we need to consider. What will our legacy be for the next generation? God’s Word speaks of this issue in a number of places. One Biblical passage that addresses the matter of our legacy is Psalm 78. The psalmist admonishes God’s people to tell the next generation about the awesome things God has done so they can know Him.
I believe faith must be taught, but it must also be “caught.” It must be heard but also seen. I am grateful for the legacy of faith that was passed to me through my grandparents, parents, Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, coaches, and other adults who influenced me when I was younger. I am also thankful for my friends- brothers and sisters in Christ from whom I have learned so much. A few of them know the worst about me and have chosen to love me anyway (it’s called grace!). God has used my children to teach me. My wife Karen, is really my best friend. Unlike our governor, I don’t need or want another soulmate- I already have the best! She is a woman of incredible character!
God has blessed me with a great legacy of faith. Have you ever reflected on the legacy the Lord has given you? I would encourage you to do that. Then let’s ask God to help us pass the torch of faith.
Yours for the Kingdom,
David
