Help for Haiti

Posted Monday, January 18th, 2010 | Filed under Uncategorized

For the past two summers we have sent mission teams to Nicaragua. I went on both trips. We were told that Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Only Haiti has a deeper level of poverty. After seeing so many struggling people in Nicaragua, I could only imagine how difficult life is for the people of Haiti.

Unfortunately, last week things in Haiti went from very bad to unbearable. A devastating earthquake rocked the island. Many of the buildings which were barely standing before, are now piles of rubble. Tens of thousands are dead or missing, and many are homeless. Everything is in short supply – especially water, food, and medical supplies.

The S.C. Baptist Convention has one of the best disaster relief programs in the country. I checked the convention website to see what the needs are at this time. From what I can tell, there are plans to send medical teams in the near future. However, right now there is a team in Haiti evaluating the needs so the best response can be determined. While there is not presently a call for volunteers to go to Haiti, there is a need for funds to buy supplies. The S.C. Baptist Convention is accepting funds which will be sent directly to Haiti. If you would like to contribute, you can write a check to Crossroads, and we will send it to the convention office to be dispersed for the relief efforts in Haiti. Please mark your offering envelope “Haiti” so we will know you are designating your gift.

Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. The devastation appears to be so great that it would be difficult for us to comprehend. Haiti has a history of deep spiritual darkness, but there are followers of Jesus Christ there. So the light is present in Haiti. Let’s pray that the light will shine brighter than ever!

Yours for the Kingdom,

David
