From our Pastor
Read our pastor’s newsletter articles online. These letters are written by our pastor, David Swofford, and featured in our bimonthly publication, the Crossroads Connection.
This is the first week in March which means that although it still feels like winter we know spring is coming. Spring will be a welcome relief this year. We have experienced our coldest winter in many years. Most of us are ready for some warmer weather. Of course by this summer we will be [...]
For the next few days the attention of the world will be on Vancouver, British Columbia. This Canadian province is the host city of the Winter Olympic Games. During the Olympics we occasionally hear a reference to “the Olympic ideal.” I wanted to gain a better understanding of what that means so I did a [...]
February is the month when our thoughts turn to love. Valentine’s Day comes right in the middle of the month. Our culture seems to be confused about the meaning of love. One problem for us is the limitation of language. We have one word for love. So we are dependent on context to provide the [...]
For the past two summers we have sent mission teams to Nicaragua. I went on both trips. We were told that Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Only Haiti has a deeper level of poverty. After seeing so many struggling people in Nicaragua, I could only imagine how difficult life is [...]
This is our first newsletter, not only for a new year, but also for a new decade. It is amazing how many times the word “new” appears in the Bible especially in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
Jesus called people to hear good news, to receive new life, and to be made new creations. [...]
This past Sunday our children did an awesome job of sharing the message of Christmas through drama and music. It was entertaining while also being insightful and profound. We were reminded that Christmas is a birthday party for Jesus. It really is all about Him!
Perhaps the most compelling part of their presentation is the question [...]
Several years ago I heard a Methodist pastor deliver a sermon at a community Thanksgiving service in Batesburg-Leesville, SC. In that message, Steve Bolte talked about thanksgiving being a matter of perspective. Every situation can be an opportunity for giving thanks depending on how we view it. I have forgotten that message.
It was this perspective [...]
November is the month when we celebrate Thanksgiving. I have always enjoyed Thanksgiving because it has remained relatively uncommercialized. We do receive a few extra grocery ads, but we are not bombarded with advertisement like we are during the Christmas season. Over the years Thanksgiving has continued to be a time when we can enjoy time with family and friends. It also helps us focus on what is most significant- our relationship with God.
October is the month when Halloween is celebrated. Over the years Halloween has been associated with fear and death. Fear and death have become a big business. Filmmakers earn millions of dollars from horror movies. Often these are released around the end of October. There has also been an increase in the number of [...]
About two weeks ago Fall officially began. I have always felt like this is the best time of year. Of course one reason, I enjoy autumn is that it is football season. Another reason is the change of weather. You have probably noticed that the daylight hours are growing shorter, and there is a crispness [...]
This past Sunday we started an emphasis on some of the foundational elements of the Christian life. We are calling it Extreme Makeover: Back to the Basics Edition. The sermons for the next several weeks will focus on some of the essential matters of our faith like discipleship, prayer, Bible study, missions and evangelism, worship, [...]
At the heart of the Christian faith is the call to become disciples. Jesus called people to follow Him. Then He told His followers to help other people to find their way into a relationship with Him.
Discipleship is a core value for the people of God. It is about growth and maturity in the Kingdom [...]
This past Sunday morning our deacons met. It was our last meeting before the new church year which begins September 1. For the past year we have watched a DVD in our deacons meetings featuring Pastor Johnny Hunt from First Baptist Church, Woodstock, Georgia. Included in this DVD are eleven 10-minute micro messages. We viewed [...]
When I was in high school the first week in August meant it was time for football practice to begin. The beginning of football practice signaled that the start of school was right around the corner.
Well, it’s that time of year again! Local high school teams are hard at work. School will commence soon. Summer [...]
Recently, our Student Minister, Michael Evans, led a group of students and adults on a mission trip to Chicago. They participated in a World Changers project. This past Sunday they shared their experience with our congregation. It always amazes me to hear how God works in unexpected ways in those situations.
When going on a mission [...]
